Veradero and Havana |
Cuba |
I don’t have a day by day account of 2010, but I do have a bit of a
narrative:
Around mid-2010 I was starting to get antsy and needed a vacation. I decided
to book a vacation to Cuba in early December.
I found a reasonable deal for a flight and hotel at the Melia Las Americas
all inclusive resort in Veradero Cuba for a week. Nice resort, great beach,
couple of good pools. Food was okay, nothing special. This trip was a bit of
an eye opener for me. After a day or two of lounging around the beach and
pool I was bored. And I still had four or five days to go. I forget if it
was the hotel or some other tour operator, but they had an overnight trip to
Havana. Well sign me up! I really enjoyed this. They put us on a bus and
took us to Havana. We got a walking tour of the old town, had a mojito in a
bar Hemingway supposedly frequented, and then in the evening we went to the
Tropicana Club to see the Cabaret, which was nice.
The next day we had the morning and early afternoon free before heading back
to the resort later in the afternoon. I joined up with a mother and daughter
and we went to the main cemetery in Havana which is a bit of a main site. We
hired one of the groundskeepers to show us around. When we were done he
offered to sell us some bones which surprised me. I mean, first of all
that's kind of creepy. Secondly, if I wanted to bring some back to Canada,
I'm sure I would never make it past customs. Weird. After that back in the
central part of Havana some guy convinced the three of us to eat at his
restaurant. Best meal of the trip. It was a lobster tail with rice and
plantains. Back to the resort for another day or two before flying back to
Canada.
