In late February 2018 I took a short five night trip to New York City. I had
been there once before but only briefly. This time I would see much more of
the city. New York in February was decent, I only had one day of bad
weather. My hotel was more or less in the center of the island, so I could
walk to many of the sites, and I had easy subway access for the rest of
them. My hotel room was small (not as small as when I was here last), but
okay. Other than getting to the hotel nothing worth writing about was done
today.

This was the day to see lower Manhattan. I was up bright and early to catch
one of the first ferries of the day from Battery Park to the Statue of
Liberty. The weather was great, sunny with not a cloud in the sky. I got
some great pictures of the statue from the ferry and climbed the stairs to
the top of the pedestal. I did not go right to the top. I got back on the
ferry and took it to the next stop, Ellis Island. I toured around here for
an hour or so, and then returned to Manhattan. I went in to the Wall Street
area and saw the famous bull, (and the stupid little girl statue) and walked
around the area. I had sushi for lunch from a nearby shop. I also stopped
into Trinity Church and Federal Hall.
Next I made my way over to the World Trade Center and 911 Memorial, which
was very well done. One thing that got to me was hearing the recorded phone
messages that the people on the planes had left for their loved ones. That
was hard to listen to. I then took a stroll over to the Brooklyn Bridge and
walked across most of it before turning around and heading back to the hotel
to rest. I had done a lot of walking today. In the evening I went up the
Empire State Building which was pretty cool.

My second day was spent in the midtown area. I started by going to the old
aircraft carrier (the Intrepid) that is docked on the west side and has been
turned into a museum. I love military stuff, so this was a highlight for me.
I spent about two hours walking all over the ship and going into every
accessible area. On the flight deck they have the Space Shuttle Enterprise,
which I had previously seen back when it was housed in the Smithsonian Annex
outside of Washington DC. After that I took the highline pathway (would have
been better in spring/summer) to the Chelsea Market where I looked around
and had lunch.
After lunch I went to the New York Public Library, which was okay. They have
the stuffed animals that inspired Winnie the Pooh here. I then went to the
Rockefeller building which has a viewpoint you can go up to (similar to the
Empire State Building). This was good, I am glad I did it in the daytime as
I had done the ESB at night and it was nice to see the city from so high
during two different times of day. It was another day with a lot of walking
and my feet were sore, so I didn't do much this evening.

This morning I went to the Met. This museum has everything from painting to
sculpture to ceramics and more. I enjoyed this museum, but there is so much
to see here. I spent about three hours going though most of the exhibits. In
the afternoon I walked through Central Park. This was okay, but not great.
All the vegetation was still dead from winter. It would have been better in
the spring or summer.

On my last full day the weather sucked. It was cold and rainy. I went to the
Natural History Museum which is famous, but I was disappointed. The exhibits
were okay, but I had seen better in DC and Europe. Also, the gems and
minerals section was closed for renovation. I then went to the Historical
Society, which was okay. They had a massive collection of Tiffany lamps and
some other stuff. It was too cold and rainy/damp out to do much else, and I
didn't really feel like it, so I just returned to the hotel for the rest of
the day.
