| There is a hop on, hop off bus service that goes from Cusco to Lima with stops at several places. This evening I hopped on the evening bus for an overnight ride to Puno. | ||
| November 16, 2015 - Monday | Lake Titikaka | Peru |
Early morning arrival in Puno. Puno is located on the shore of Lake
Titikaka. Everything was closed except this one breakfast place we were at.
I wasn’t hungry. After breakfast we got on a boat that took us to these
man-made islands built out of reeds. Then we went to another island which
seemed very Mediterranean to me. We had lunch here and walked around a bit.
Hopped back on the bus for another overnight ride.

| November 17, 2015 - Tuesday | Chivay | Peru |
The bus dropped me off in Arequipa, and I transferred to a different bus for
a two day tour of Colca Canyon. On the way there we went over a mountain
pass at 4,910 meters above sea level. We stopped at the top, and got out of
the bus. I almost immediately had to get back on. I couldn't breath. At
4,000 meters I had no problem, but at almost 5,000 I did. It was a very
scenic drive into Chivay, the town located in the canyon that we would sleep
in for the night.

Today we actually saw the canyon sights. It is a massive canyon with farming
and terraces all over it. Very pretty. We stopped at a place to see the
condors, but they were not flying today. Arrived later in the day in
Arequipa.

Went to see the Monastery of Santa Catalina.

In the morning back on the hop on, hop off bus for an almost full day ride
to Huacachina, a beautiful oasis in the desert. We did stop near some of the
Nazca lines and climbed a viewing tower. One option was to do an overnight
at Nazca but I decided not to.

Dune buggy ride. Very fun. Lost my sunglasses. We stopped at one large sand
dune and went sandboarding. In the evening back on the bus to Paracas,
arriving later in the evening.

Boat tour of Isle Ballastras, said to be a poor mans Galapagos islands. I
saw penguins, birds, seals, and manatees. It was okay. I bought a new pair
of sunglasses. Back on the bus in the evening to Lima. Arrived late evening.
